You put the meeting in Google Calendar, the time came and went, and your phone never made a sound. Google Calendar notifications fail for a handful of predictable reasons, and most take under a minute to fix. Work through the checks below in order: the first three solve most cases.
The short version: make sure the event actually has a notification (not just an email), that your phone or browser is allowed to show Calendar notifications, and that Do Not Disturb, Focus or battery saving is not silencing them.
Fixes That Apply Everywhere
1. Check the event really has a notification
Open the event and look for the bell icon. No bell means no reminder. Also check the type: a notification set to Email only sends an email, it never pops up on your screen. Change it to Notification, and consider adding a second one, for example one the day before and one 10 minutes before.
2. Set default notifications for every calendar
Defaults are set per calendar, so your main calendar can have them while a work, shared or subscribed calendar has none. On a computer, open Google Calendar, click the gear icon, then Settings, pick the calendar under Settings for my calendars and scroll to Event notifications and All-day event notifications. Add a notification to each calendar you rely on.
Watch out: events Google adds from Gmail (flights, restaurant bookings, hotel stays) and events other people invite you to follow your default for that calendar. If the default is empty, they arrive silently.
3. Check the time zone
If notifications arrive, but at the wrong time, your calendar time zone and your device time zone disagree. In Calendar Settings > General > Time zone, set your primary time zone, and make sure your phone is set to set its time zone automatically.
Google Calendar Notifications Not Working on Android
Turn on "Notify on this device". Open Google Calendar, tap the menu, then Settings > General, and make sure Notify on this device is on.
Allow Calendar notifications. Go to Settings > Apps > Calendar > Notifications. Make sure notifications are on and that the event reminder category is set to Alerting with a sound, not Silent.
Remove battery restrictions. In Settings > Apps > Calendar > Battery, choose Unrestricted. On Samsung phones also remove Calendar from Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps; Xiaomi and OnePlus have similar "autostart" and battery saver lists.
Let Calendar through Do Not Disturb. In Settings > Notifications > Do Not Disturb > Apps, add Google Calendar. Bedtime mode uses the same rules.
Check sync. In Settings > Accounts > Google > Account sync, make sure Calendar is on. In the Calendar app, pull down on the schedule to refresh. If events made on your computer do not show up on your phone, the phone cannot notify you about them.
Still nothing? Clear the Calendar app's cache (Settings > Apps > Calendar > Storage > Clear cache) and restart the phone. For more on setting reminders that go off on Android, see how to set a reminder on Android.
Google Calendar Notifications Not Working on iPhone
Allow notifications. Go to Settings > Notifications > Google Calendar (or Calendar if you use Apple's app) and turn on Allow Notifications, Sounds and Lock Screen.
Check Focus. In Settings > Focus, open each Focus you use (Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Work) and add the calendar app under Allowed Apps. Turn on Time Sensitive Notifications too.
Turn off scheduled summary for Calendar. If the calendar app is in Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary, its alerts are held back and delivered in a batch, often too late.
If you use Apple Calendar with a Google account: check Settings > Calendar > Default Alert Times and make sure the Google account is switched on under Settings > Calendar > Accounts. Alerts can differ from what you see on the web, so open one synced event and check it has an alert.

Google Calendar Notifications Not Working on a Computer
Choose a notification style. In Google Calendar on the web, open Settings > Notification settings and choose Desktop notifications or Alerts. If it says Off, you will never see a pop-up.
Allow the browser to notify you. Click the icon to the left of the address bar on calendar.google.com and set Notifications to Allow.
Allow the browser in your operating system. On a Mac, open System Settings > Notifications and allow your browser. On Windows, open Settings > System > Notifications and allow your browser, and check that Do Not Disturb or Focus is off.
Keep a Calendar tab open. Web notifications only arrive while Google Calendar is open in a tab. Close the tab, or the laptop, and there is nothing to notify you.
Quick Checklist
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No notification for any event | App or browser notifications blocked | Allow notifications in phone, browser and OS settings |
| Only some events notify | No default notification on that calendar | Set defaults per calendar, including all-day and Gmail events |
| Email arrives, no pop-up | Notification type is Email | Change it to Notification |
| Notification arrives late | Battery saving or scheduled summary | Set Calendar to Unrestricted; remove from summary |
| Silent at night or in meetings | Do Not Disturb or Focus | Allow Calendar as an exception |
| Wrong time | Time zone mismatch | Align calendar and device time zones |
When a Notification Is Not Enough
Even when every setting is right, a Google Calendar notification is one short sound and a banner. It is easy to miss when your phone is face down, in a bag, on silent at your desk, or when the banner arrives while you are in the middle of something else. That is not a settings problem; it is the limit of notifications. We go deeper in why calendar notifications fail.
For the meetings and appointments you cannot afford to miss, Remindavo rings your phone like a real call before each Google Calendar event, with a voice that reads the event name: "Client call with Sarah in 10 minutes." It keeps ringing until you answer, and because it reads your calendar, moved or new events are picked up automatically.
Sign in with Google at web.remindavo.com or in the iPhone or Android app.
Pick the calendars you want calls for. Every timed event gets a reminder.
Choose how early you want the call and verify your phone number.
The free plan includes 5 real reminder calls or 14 days, whichever comes first, with no credit card. Full setup steps are in our guide to phone call reminders for Google Calendar.
