Android gives you four built-in ways to be reminded of something: Google Assistant (or Gemini), Google Tasks, Google Calendar notifications and Clock alarms. Each is good at a different job. Here is how to set each one up in under a minute, why Android reminders get silenced, and what to do for the ones you really cannot afford to miss.
The short version: use your voice assistant or Google Tasks for to-dos, Google Calendar notifications for appointments, an alarm when you need something that keeps ringing, and a phone call reminder for meetings and appointments that matter.
1. Ask Google Assistant or Gemini to Remind You
The fastest method, and the one you will actually use while your hands are full. Say "Hey Google" or hold the power button, then:
- "Remind me to call Mum at 6pm."
- "Remind me to take my medication every day at 8am."
- "Remind me to pay the electricity bill on Friday at 9am."
- "Show my reminders." (to check what is already set)
Reminders you create by voice are saved as tasks in Google Tasks, so you can edit or delete them there later.
Tip: always say a time, not just a day. "Remind me tomorrow" can fire at a time that does not suit you; "remind me tomorrow at 9:15" fires when you can act.
2. Set a Reminder in Google Tasks
Best for to-dos with a deadline: renew a prescription, call the plumber, send an invoice.
Open Google Tasks (or the Tasks tab inside Google Calendar) and tap the + button.
Type what you need to remember. Make it specific: "Call Dr. Patel's office to reschedule" beats "dentist".
Tap the clock icon and pick a date and time. A task with only a date shows up on your list but is easy to miss.
Optional: tap Repeat for daily, weekly or monthly reminders, then tap Save.
On a Samsung Galaxy, the Samsung Reminder app and Bixby work the same way: create a reminder, set a time, and it notifies you.
3. Add Google Calendar Notifications for Appointments
Appointments belong in your calendar, not in a task list, because they have a start time, a place and often a video link.
Per event: when creating or editing an event in Google Calendar, tap Add notification and pick a time. Add a second one. A good pair is one the day before and one timed to when you need to leave or join.
For every event: open Google Calendar, tap the menu, then Settings, pick your account calendar and tap Default notifications under Events. New events then get it automatically.
Check the right calendar: default notifications are set per calendar, so a shared or work calendar may still have none.
4. Use an Alarm When It Has to Keep Ringing
Tasks and Calendar notifications play one short sound. If you need something that keeps ringing until you stop it, open the Clock app, tap Alarm, tap +, pick the time and add a Label such as "Leave for school pickup". The downside: alarms are not tied to your calendar, so when a meeting moves, the alarm does not.
Which Android Reminder Should You Use?
| Best for | Keeps ringing? | Follows calendar changes? | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assistant / Gemini / Google Tasks | To-dos, errands, repeats | No, one notification | No |
| Google Calendar notification | Appointments and meetings | No, one notification | Yes |
| Clock alarm | Fixed wake-up or leave times | Yes | No |
| Remindavo call | Meetings and appointments you cannot miss | Yes, rings like a call | Yes |
Why Android Reminders Still Get Missed
- Battery optimization. Android, and Samsung, Xiaomi and OnePlus phones in particular, put apps they think you do not use to sleep, which delays or drops their notifications. In Settings > Apps, open the app, tap Battery and choose Unrestricted. On Samsung, also remove it from Sleeping apps.
- Do Not Disturb or Bedtime mode. Both silence notifications. In Settings > Notifications > Do Not Disturb, add your calendar and tasks apps under Apps that can interrupt.
- Notification category set to silent. Long-press a notification from the app, or open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, and make sure reminders are set to Alerting, not Silent.
- The notification gets swiped away. One that arrives while you are typing or on a call is gone in a second, often unread.
- Phone face down, in a bag or across the room. One short sound is easy not to hear. Our guide on why calendar notifications fail goes deeper.
Get a Phone Call Instead of a Notification
For the meetings and appointments that matter, a ringing phone works where a notification does not. Remindavo reads your phone's calendar, Google Calendar or Outlook and rings your Android phone before each event, with a voice that reads the event name, for example "Client call with Sarah in 10 minutes". More detail in our guide to phone call reminders for your Android calendar.
Download the Remindavo Android app from Google Play. It works with your phone's calendar straight away; sign in with Google, Microsoft or your phone number to add cloud calendars.
Pick your calendars. Every timed event gets a reminder automatically, including ones you add or move later.
Choose how early you want the call and verify your phone number so a real phone call follows if the app alert goes unanswered.
The free plan includes 5 real reminder calls or 14 days, whichever comes first, with no credit card. App alerts stay free after that, and Premium is $9.99 a month on Google Play for unlimited calls.
